What To Expect During Your IVF Journey: A Step-By-Step Guide

Thinking about IVF? It can feel overwhelming at first, but you're not alone! This blog post will guide you through what to expect during your IVF journey, from the initial consultation to the pregnancy test.

Getting Started

Referral and Consultation: Your journey might begin with a referral from your doctor or a self-referral to a fertility clinic. During your consultation, the doctor will discuss your medical history and recommend a treatment plan based on your unique circumstances.

Pre-Treatment: Tests like blood tests and ultrasounds will be done to assess your fertility. This is also a good time to address any emotional concerns through fertility counseling, which is available throughout the process.

IVF Process: A Breakdown

We'll now discuss the 8 steps which you will uncover during your IVF journey.

Step 1 Stimulation & Monitoring

Fertility drugs are used to stimulate your ovaries to produce multiple eggs. Regular scans and blood tests will track your progress.

Step 2 Egg Donation

After stimulation, a minor procedure retrieves the eggs from your ovaries while you're sedated.

Step 3 Sperm Collection

Your partner will provide a sperm sample on the same day or have it frozen beforehand.

Step 4 Fertilisation

Eggs and sperm are combined in a lab dish for fertilisation. In some cases, a procedure called ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) might be used.

Step 5  Embryo Development

The fertilised eggs (embryos) are carefully monitored for development over the next few days.

Step 6 Embryo Transfer

One or two healthy embryos are transferred back into your uterus through a thin catheter, similar to a smear test.

Step 7: The Wait (The Two-Week Wait)

This can be an emotionally challenging time. Take care of yourself and try to live normally as much as possible.

Step 8: The Outcome: A pregnancy test will reveal the results.

A pregnancy test will reveal the results.

If your test comes out positive, congratulations! You'll have follow-up scans to monitor the pregnancy.

If it's a negative test, don't give up! Many couples experience multiple cycles before success. Your clinic will support you in deciding the next steps.

Additional Considerations

IVF Variations: There are variations in the IVF process depending on individual needs. For instance, some may involve genetic testing of embryos or embryo freezing for future cycles.

Side Effects and Risks: Hormone injections can cause side effects like mood swings, fatigue, and headaches. Discuss any concerns with your doctor.

Emotional Support: IVF can be emotionally demanding. Consider counseling and support groups to help you navigate the process.
